Edit an AI recommendation letter without overstating the endorsement
By GPTHumanizer · Writing guide
A recommendation letter speaks in someone else's professional capacity. Making its wording smoother must not expand what that person observed or how strongly they endorse the applicant. Start with the recommender's own assessment, then edit its expression. If the institution or recipient restricts AI assistance, follow that requirement before using any rewriting tool.
Separate observation from supplied background
Put the relationship, period of contact and direct observations in a short fact sheet. Keep candidate-supplied background in a separate column. A resume can tell you that a project happened; it does not establish that you supervised it. If you decide to include supplied information, preserve its source rather than changing it into a firsthand claim.
A missing example is a question for the recommender, not an invitation for the editor to invent a story. Do not fill an empty space with a new award, ranking, client result or leadership role.
Preserve the strength and scope of the endorsement
“Recommend for a role involving documentation” and “recommend without reservation for any leadership role” express different judgments. A wording tool should not choose between them. Keep the opportunity and the recommender's intended strength of support explicit.
Likewise, a comparison such as “top five percent” needs a real comparison group and a judgment the recommender can support. Delete an unsupported comparison or return it for clarification; do not replace it with another impressive-sounding ranking.
Edit a short passage against the same facts
This original fictional example was edited by hand. It is not model output or a real applicant’s record.
Before and after: an editing example
Original draft
I worked with Jordan on a six-week documentation project. During that project, I reviewed Jordan's weekly handover notes. Those notes recorded unresolved questions and named the person responsible for each next step. Based on the documentation work I reviewed, I recommend Jordan for a role involving project documentation.
Edited example
I worked with Jordan on a six-week documentation project and reviewed the weekly handover notes. Jordan recorded unresolved questions and named who was responsible for each next step. Based on that documentation work, I recommend Jordan for a role involving project documentation.
The edit joins repeated context and simplifies one phrase. The relationship, six-week period, reviewed work and limited endorsement stay the same. It does not say the writer managed Jordan or observed leadership of the entire project.

| Unapproved change | What it changes |
|---|---|
| I supervised Jordan for six months. | Changes both relationship and duration. |
| Jordan resolved every issue. | Turns recording questions into solving them. |
| Jordan was the strongest member of the team. | Introduces a comparison. |
| I recommend Jordan for any management position. | Broadens the endorsement. |
Protect material you are not entitled to share
Check organizational policy and the tool's data-handling information before entering a letter. Removing a name alone may not remove identifying project details. Use a fictional sample to learn the workflow; do not paste confidential applicant records into a tool whose use has not been approved for that material.
GPTHumanizer can suggest wording for an existing passage. It does not establish an applicant's qualifications, verify the writer's observations or determine selection outcomes. Its public editing guides can be read without submitting a letter. Rewriting requires sign-in and a word allowance; new accounts receive a one-time 100-word trial. Output still needs review.
Return the final decision to the recommender
Compare the revision with the fact sheet, then check the intended recipient and application instructions. The recommender must approve the final assessment, wording and submission. Preparing a draft does not authorize someone else to sign it or send a confidential recommendation in the writer's name.
Before sending: confirm relationship, duration, source of every example, intended endorsement, recipient, names and pronouns. Check that no new ranking or promise appeared during editing. Keep the final approved copy separate from suggestions that were rejected.

Your final review
- The relationship and period of contact are unchanged.
- Firsthand observations remain distinct from supplied background.
- No new ranking, outcome or stronger endorsement has appeared.
- The recommender has approved the assessment and final wording.
- The recipient’s instructions and relevant privacy and AI policies are satisfied.
